Newsflash: How to Keep Your Home & Family Safe During the Holidays

The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year! But with all the extra fun come some hidden dangers. Between parties, travel, gifts, decorations, and chestnuts roasting on an open fire, it is important to make sure your home and family stay safe this holiday season with these four suggestions.

1. Home Deliveries

There is nothing more frustrating than expecting the perfect Christmas gift for a family member for it to be stolen off your front porch while you’re at work or running errands. To help combat issues like this (and you’re doing a lot of your Christmas shopping via Amazon), consider using an Amazon Locker. Additionally, most stores now offer an online order with a free ship to store option.

A doorbell camera is another option for seeing activity if your packages continue to disappear. Trim bushes and other obstructions that a potential thief could use for cover.

2. Keep Your Home Safe While Traveling

If you plan to travel during the holidays, make sure to not share details in your social media accounts. But do share with a trusted neighbor that you are traveling, so there is someone keeping an eye out on your home. Setting timers for indoor and outdoor lights help keep the illusion someone is at home. If you have a smart home system, you can monitor your home while away, as well as adjusting light settings.

3. Fire Safety

Electrical fires happen, particularly in December and they can be deadly. Be sure to inspect your light strings before using them for any fraying or cracking. Go through and check the batteries on your smoke alarms. If you don’t already have a fire extinguisher, be sure to purchase one and keep it where everyone knows where it is. Be sure to understand how to operate it before you need to use it.

4. Sweep Your Chimney

The holidays and a fire in the fireplace go together like hot chocolate and marshmallows. Be sure to inspect and sweep your chimney before you light your first fire of the season and protect your home from a chimney fire.

Keep your holiday season merry and bright with your home and family safe!
